The stoics had it right. I’ve never read anything by Aurelius that didn’t sound bells of YES in my being. And what a fantastic book for young men! I think I’ll order one now for my nephew.🙏

Yes, Alisa is a wonder and so is this gift of a post, Kim. Your words and the Joni Mitchell are FAB. So glad to have met you on the Zoom on grief Alisa helped us all with. Hope to hear more from you. xo ~ Mary

Hi Mary. Yes, it was so wonderful to connect with you and see you on the zoom call. I am just back from Florida and have some reading to catch up on, and your piece is on my list. I wanted to read it with intention. The water and wave metaphors have been numerous this past week. The first thing I did when I woke up back at home this morning was jump into my beautiful ocean. I missed my cold dips in the Pacific. Thanks for being here. xo

I have pondered whether Epictetus was preparing us for long distance air travel, especially in the twelve to fourteen hour range followed by multiple connecting flights. We have no control over our schedule, little control over what we eat in the air, we are physically constrained, and there is a constant overbearing aura of suspicion and authority, especially during secondary security checks. Defacto slaves.

Once, during an itinerary from WDC > Tokyo > Singapore > Djakarta > Denpasar for three days, then returning home via the same route, where I spent two days at home, followed by another itinerary from WDC > Frankfurt > Rome for five days and return via the same route, I understood exactly what Epictetus meant when he said that the only sovereignty we possess is what goes on inside our mind.
