I am a citified boy who is always amazed and immensely appreciative of nature and human hands that make things grow.

I can’t imagine growing up in NYC! I’ve been there once and made straight for Central Park after one day. A highlight was the MOMA. (I think that’s what it was called.) I was in awe. Monet’s Garden Lilies filled an entire room and brought me to tears.

Our excellent son-in-law built my dearly beloved three grow beds for Mother’s Day last year, installed them, and filled them with his secret blend of soils.

What a great gift.

Wow... I cannot wait to share this with my dad... it's so inspiring. I think it will put the wind in his sails to get out there this year. In the city, I am right next to the most incredible park and that alone sustains me with the roses, the view of the bay, and all people out walking their dogs. You asked about something that surprised us... I didn't know (before we had them out at the ranch) that chickens could be so emotionally attached to their people... Our one chicken who survived the bear attack is this little hen who just has to be with you at all times and I never thought I could develop affection for such an odd little bird--but there it is. She takes care of the garden and she is always by my dad's side... loyal as ever. Total surprise.

A lonely chicken?! Awww. That’s so cute. My youngest son used to raise little bantam chickens for 4H. He kept the chicks in his closet for the longest time. I had no idea they could bond with humans. I hope your dad enjoys the site.

Your set-up looks AMAZING! I, too, am delving into gardening this year, and while I have a small in-ground plot established from years ago, I decided to just do containers this year and I'm hooked! So much easier to deal with, and to keep the dogs out of (I was spinning wheels trying to think of a fencing solution for the in-ground garden which prompted the containers). My set up is not as nice as yours - I literally used 5-gallon Home Depot and Lowes buckets! But I aspire to have something like what you're doing.

Happy growing!

That’s great that you got the containers going Jen. Whatever works to get things started I say! I’ve got to get some kind of container as my potatoes are next up for planting and I’ve run out of space for them. Good luck with all your growies!

I'm about seventeen steps behind you guys (i.e., I'm learning what tools I need to weed my horribly overgrown garden), but this is wildly inspiring. Keep sharing photos and videos, please!

Thanks Donna. Aspirational pictures have been stored in my head for a while now. Turning out better than I imagined. My husband is the creative genius, I’m the spark and inspirational project manager. But I can still work a rake and shovel like no one’s business! 😂

Very cool garden setup. Great use of the front yard space—adding a private growing sanctuary ☺️❤️

That’s what I’m most excited about when everything gets growing Lee. Sanctuary is perfect word. Surrounded by tall sunflowers, corn, peas, beans and flowers. 🙌

Did you do the work yourselves??? Looks awesome. As soon as we know where we will be in the next year a victory garden is on my list.

Yes. We are doing all the work ourselves. The fence was last year. Removed huge overgrown and dead hedge. Ralph hand dug each fence post hole. Took him all winter/spring/summer, but it turned out beautifully. That’s why the garden had to wait until this year. Took much longer than we thought!
